A fall in an elderly patient with osteoporotic bones might result in a compression fracture or a break in one or more of the vertebrae that may lead to pain and limitation of movement. Surgery can help treat such fractures. In the vertebroplasty procedure, an injection of bone cement mixture into the fractured vertebrae gives it strength. In the Kyphoplasty procedure, a balloon is inserted and inflated inside the compressed fractured vertebrae to make room for the cement mixture. The balloon is removed after the cement is injected. Both these procedures are minimally invasive and can be done in daycare settings. They can help relieve pain and improve mobility when other measures fail to provide relief.
