What is Unicondylar Knee Replacement Surgery?

• Sometimes only one side of the knee, the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) side sustains more damage than the other during arthritis, leading to pain, deformity and difficulty in walking. Unicondylar Knee Replacement (UKR) Surgery is a procedure that involves the removal of the damaged bone and cartilage on the affected side and replacing them with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metallic or Polymer materials. The advantage of this over a total knee replacement is that there is a relatively normal feel to the joint with almost no restriction to function after the procedure as the remaining stabilizers and ligaments stay intact.
